ARCADIA designworks imagines and designs in three dimensions both in architecture and product design. 

The Teele Hair Color Mixing Bowl is an example of our industrial design capacity to create hand sketches and product briefs into an articulate design proven through prototypes using 3D printing technology.

ARCADIA transferred the parametrically drawn bowl design into two-dimensional design patent and manufacturing drawings for submission to the USPO and G&G Products a local plastic injection molding manufacturer.

Product Design

Vassalboro, Maine

Positioned to assist clients such as product manufacturers, ARCADIA designed a metal hardware solution, for Duratherm Windows, a division of Pella Windows. This product added a dependable product to the Duratherm's growing and modern line of wood windows.

The ModCast side latch designed by ARCADIA follows a simple geometry of two parallel rectangles: a mounting plate and finger paddle.

In addition to achieving Duratherm's goal of producing a stronger latch pawl, ARCADIA designers concealed the mounting plate fasteners and created a comfortable finger paddle with a sculpted underside node for the user to tactilely discover when engaging the latch.

The first manufacturing run was produced with stainless steel by New England Castings of Standish, Maine.

Product Design

Kennebunk, Maine

The dooloop, currently manufactured in Kennebunk, Maine by G&G Products is made from an injection-molded biodegradable plastic in 5 color variations.

For the product-label graphics and hang-tag, ARCADIA directed dooloop founder, Elizabeth Herriman to the talented team of Jessica Masse and John Hafford, owners of DesignLab in Millinocket, Maine.

Product Design

Portland Maine

ARCADIA designworks' Trilateral Kiosk is a six-sided, aluminum and fastener-free, structure designed for a quick, 10 minute assembly. 

The base, central post, and perforated display paneling and shelves break down for disassembly via simple snap-fits. The lightweight kiosk, manageable for single person transport, stores in a durable, canvas bag.

The Casco Bay Estuary Partnership and Greater Portland Council of Governments utilizes their kiosks for local and public events.  

Furniture Design Consultant

Nationwide

As a design consultant for Maine based TPDA brand agency, ARCADIA designworks assisted in the production of 60+ home patio chair designs in response to trend reports by Trend House NYC with Lowes Home Improvement.

ARCADIA produced two week-turn around concept sketches of chair back elevations resulting in a select group of axonometric drawings and 1/4 scale models.

Superimposed trend environment designs via watercolor and hand drawings of chair designs and upholstery patterns were also produced by ARCADIA for the client. These multi dimensional manufacturing renderings and models were submitted to China's Numark Industries for prototyping and production.

Chairs are manufactured, distributed, and sold throughout North America Lowes Home Improvement.

Product Design & Upcycling

Searsmont, Maine

Robbins Toys and Lumber challenged ARCADIA with the task of up-cycling manufacturing waste wood. ARCADIA designworks successfully designed and prototyped four games and a line of wooden toy vehicles which premiered at the New York CIty Toy Fair.

The Original Ultimate Spinner winning three national awards, takes the lead, followed by Truckles TM, and a variety of unique bag-toss games. 

Field Research

Saco, Maine

Working from Wentworth Technology's engineering and design guidelines, ARCADIA designworks conducted field research on current competitor products and accessories, and the users of commercial grade, drive-thru headsets.

Following the compilation of our research, ARCADIA facilitated a one day design session with Wentworth's engineering and marketing + sales team; this resulted in two conceptual and digital model options.

Portland, Maine

Entrepreneur and chef Peter Murphy came to ARCADIA designworks asking if the firm could help him fulfill a “life dream."

The challenge: design a mobile food cart Murphy could tow behind an electric bicycle.

Enter Rebel Cheesesteaks’ food cart, designed collaboratively with ARCADIA, Murphy, William Bruce, metal fabricator of Tunnelwerks, and seamstress Giselle Larios of Atelier Stitch. The team completed the food cart in time for the start of summer 2019 for Murphy to begin selling cheesesteak sandwiches from his new cart in Portland, Maine.

Fabricated predominantly out of aluminum tubes, angles and sheets, the mobile food cart contains an on-demand, propane hot water heater, a propane grill, and a sink. Food and condiments are stored in removable coolers.

ARCADIA was especially thrilled to see Sunbrella Fabric stretch from the rigid, geometric posts and brackets creating a free-form canopy that cleverly protects the cook and cart, plus results in a charming cap.

Furniture Design

Vacaville, California & Falmouth, Maine

For Transpac Imports ARCADIA designworks developed design specification sheets for the production of metal furniture and novelty ware. 

Designs were produced using two-point perspective hand drawings and Sketchup models.

Individual tables are sold online and thru Foreside Home and Garden catalogs.

Alba Technic

Winthrop, Maine

Head related injuries and deaths as a result of accidental falls are a number 1 problem amongst the older adults the general population. Consumers do not want bulky protective gear, so to avoid an awkward band, the research and development team of Alba Technic worked with ARCADIA designworks to develop an appropriately stylish protective headband accepted by consumers who prone to falling and/or frequent epileptic seizures.* 

To design and fabricate a series of prototypes, ARCADIA designers and Alba collaborated with L&K Manufacturing engineers and the University of Maine's Advanced Manufacturing Center. These resulting prototypes premiered at the 2015 TechConnect World Innovation Conference & Expo in Washington, DC and will serve as the beta model for commercialization.

The band is comprised of a patented composite material injection molded by L&K into a 3D printed die with laser cut dilatant pads adhered at key impact locations. The finished product is wrapped in the stylish, high-performance, removable fabric cover.

*Based laboratory tests, the SMARTY protective headband has demonstrated a decrease in impact up to 90% during a fall. Results are based on head injury criterion used in testing motorcycle helmets.

In 2017, STARC hired ARCADIA designworks to assist them in improving the design of their extruded gasketing system.

Stair Handrail

Cambridge, Massachusetts

ARCADIA designworks metalwork experience exists in architectural components as well as free-standing pieces, such as the Brooks Residence handrail.

The handrail is a clean, curving form made entirely of stainless steel. ARCADIA's mock-up models and fabrication drawings enabled TigPro, a Maine based stainless steel fabrication shop, to fabricate in-house parts and install the handrail at the residence.

In 2013, ARCADIA designworks received a design commissions for the Molnyke Health Care small and large instructional murals and point-of-touch kiosks. With the assistance of multifaceted graphic designers, metalwork consultants, and large format printers, ARCADIA designworks expanded our design services into the world of new media.

Product Design

Anchorage, Alaska

ARCADIA designworks assisted The Jubiltree Company in design refinements, manufacturing drawings and patent diagrams for their wooden dowel tree.

ARCADIA designworks public presentations are often augmented with manipulative, three dimensional tools, such as the XYZ cube which teaches the Cartesian Coordinate System of three dimensional objects in space but also in urban planning. Additionally engaged as a chess set in ARCADIA'a Deliberate, Design and Act Workshop, the XYZ cube becomes a strategic game and precursor. For example, three dimensional space is critical to the planning of a small community on a finite parcel of land with access only to basic amenities, and services. The cube helps us think about objects in our environment in relationship to one another.

Staff at ARCADIA designworks participates in public presentations and forums at public schools, higher education institutions, businesses, and arts organizations to showcase finished design projects and conceptual design theories.

ARCADIA designworks Modeling Concepts

From additive to subtractive modeling, ARCADIA designworks utilizes a variety of techniques to give three dimensions to non-dimensional ideas.

With our new MakerGear M2, 3D printer ARCADIA can fabricate prototypes in PLA and ABS plastic. This modeling tool expands our capabilities and positions ARCADIA as a firm offering one of a kind, plastic products.
